CHARACTER, UTILIZATION, HUNTING STYLE.

CHARACTER:

Because of its strong temperment, its agressive character and sense of loyalty, combined with a good mental balance, it is a magnificent working dog. It fears nothing and no one; is brave and courageous, swelling in combat. Intelligence and good physical constitution make it one of our most privileged hunting breeds, suitable for persons of resolute character and athletic. It adapts to family life, but needs to be treated with authority. It is affectionate in its family circle, capable of acting as a pet as long as it has sufficient space to give free reign to its vitality. It is a born hunting dog, with unequaled bravery and courage. It is a good companion as a watchdog or for hunting.


UTILIZATION:

A holding dog in the Spanish hunting tradition, in which it has no fear of facing a boar, grasping it without concern for its own life. It is also used for working with bulls for controlling the wild animals in the pastures of Salamanca and the Andalusian estates, having performed this duty for centuries. Until 1860 they took part in one of the phases of the bullfight, known as the dogs' turn, that Goya immortalized in his "Tauromaquía". It is also a good watchdog, for hunting and defense.


HUNTING STYLE:

The Alano is a dog of great valor and a powerful hunter. The method used for hunting wild boar is the "gancho" or scouring: the hunters surround the hillside and release the dogs. The dogs proceed to trap and hold the boar which is then downed by shots or knife.
